Lewis Carroll would have been delighted to see his characters outside the house he stayed in on his visits to Whitby. Whitby is probably the source of some of his ideas. The walrus and the Carpenter may have walked on Whitby Beach and a picnic in the Abbey grounds may have been the source of the scene of the the mad dance. His first published work was in the Whitby Gazette, a comic poem.The Hunting of the Snark

Here Mr Barker joined in the Mad Hatter's tea party with children from Westcliffe Primary School when he unveiled the plaque. Do you recognise yourself among these young actors?

Ten Years Later The hotel has changed hands and been refurbished and the plaque resited next to the door. For the occasion the mayor and mayoress of Whitby, Mr Barker, the new proprieters and Alice,the Mad Hatter and the March Hare were there to honour the occasion before a large group of unlookers
