Whitby Heritage Open Days 2010, September 11th & 12th
Whitby, in common with towns all over Britain and indeed Europe opens up places of special interest without charges to visitors and towns people alike. A free leaflet with more details and a map will be available at the Tourist Office

2. ST.HILDA'S CHURCH, WEST CLIFF

Built 1884. Fabric, furnishings and stained glass of interest. Guided tours.
3. WHITBY MUSEUM, PANNETT PARK

Geology, paleontology, archeology, maritime,social history, etc. Cafe.
4. VICTORIA SPA WELL HOUSE, BROOMFIELD TERRACE (OFF BAGDALE)

Chalybeate Spa Well House. Grade II listed building.
5. FLOWERGATE UNITED REFORMED CHURCH

Built 1878. Communion token and other displays. Light refreshments available.

Built 1867 in 13th cent Gothic style.Light refreshments in Parish Centre.
7. CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST, BRUNSWICK STREET.

8. UNITARIAN CHAPEL, FLOWERGATE

Special exhibition to commemorate the Rev. Francis Haydn Williams, Minister of the Chapel from 1888-1910. To mark the anniversary of his death, a talk will be given by the Rev. Margaret Kirk at 15-00 on Sun 12 Sept,lasting about 40 min.
9. ST. NINIAN'S CHURCH, BAXTERGATE

Vernacular building of 1778. Access via double steps up from street level.
10. WHITBY JET HERITAGE CENTRE, CHURCH STREET (NEAR BOTTOM OF 199 CHURCH STAIRS)

An original 19th century jet workshop.
11. 2 BLACKBURN'S YARD, CHURCH STREET

Terraced cottage. 17th century wood panelling, Georgian fireplace, cruck frame.
12. WHITBY YARDS EVENT (INFORMATION AT CLARKS YARD, JUNCTION OF BRIDGE STREET AND CHURCH STREET)

Visit three yards of 17th/18th century cottages(Clark's Yard, Borough Place, Blackburn's Yard). Residents will be available to talk to visitors.
13. YHA WHITBY, ABBEY HOUSE (BEHIND ABBEY VISITOR CENTRE; APPROACH VIA ACCESS ROAD TO THE LEFT OF THE CENTRE)

Grade I listed building. Many historical features from 12th to 19th centuries. Guided tours.
14. WHITBY GEORGIAN GUIDED WALK
SUN 11.00-12.30
A walk through some of the Georgian streets on the west side of the town. Pre-booking required (see leaflet for details.)
15. WHITBY CRAGG EVENT.
SAT 14.00-16.00
The Cragg is a narrow elevated lane along the cliff face below the Khyber Pass and behind Pier Road on the west side of Whitby.The residents of some of the surviving fishermen's cottages will be available to talk to visitors (see leaflet).
16. WHITBY PAVILION THEATRE EVENT
SUN 13.00-15.30 (Last admission for tours 15.00)
Built 1880. Exhibition presents colourful History of Theatre in Whitby. Guided tour behind the scenes to restricted access areas, with well preserved original features. Small groups only (consultation of leaflet essential).

Unitarian Chapel, Flowergate.Special Exhibition for the centenary of the death of the Rev. Francis Hayden Williams
Francis Hayden Williams was a well known character in the Whitby of his day. He had a strong sense of civic right and justice and was often a thorn in the flesh of the authorities of the time.
He was a one man Whitby Civic Society and Whitby Civic Society of to-day looks forward to the exhibition and the talk by the Rev Margaret Kirk
