The Victoria Spa Well House

The Victoria Spa Well House was built in 1870, a circular building eight feet in diameter and eight feet high with a conical roof topped with an octagonal lantern. It conceals an elegant Art Deco interior lined with white glazed brickwork tiles and stencilled decoration. The Spa water was delivered from a swan headed, porcelain handled hand pump of brass and copper.

The Victoria Spa Well House once boasted its waters were almost the equal of those of Tunbridge Wells, regarded as the finest Chalybeate in England. but people ignored its reputed healing qualities and the building has remained unused for the past 130 years with its curious circular structure preserved intact.

In Victorian times it was situated in a pleasant woodland area and elegant visitors to Whitby could visit the well house to drink its iron rich waters. The Grade II listed building was included in Alderman Pannett’s will, in which he bequeathed areas of Whitby including Pannett Park to the people of Whitby, and is now owned by Whitby Town Council. It is now at the bottom of the garden of 4 Broomfield Terrace and accessed from that lane at the rear.

The building is not normally accessible except by request but will be open on Saturday, 20th September 2025 and members of Whitby Civic Society will be available to answer questions. The spa is located on the lane at the rear of Broomfield Terrace by Spa Well Court, Whitby and will be open 1000 until 1400.
